Welcome to the first post in our six-part series exploring the future of research software in Germany. In each installment, we present opinion statements on why a national research software institution could and should be created to strengthen Germany’s research ecosystem.

Research software is now an indispensable part of scientific work, and its importance will only increase. Modern research is simply no longer feasible without high-quality software of all types and categories.

This year is going to be exciting: many of our FutuRSI project partners will be at Informatik 2025! The festival is a great opportunity to exchange ideas about the latest developments in research, computer science, and digital tools.

A special highlight: our FutuRSI project coordinator, Florian Mannseicher, will be moderating a panel on Thursday, September 18, from 4:30–5:30 p.m. on the topic “(Open) Research Software: An Indispensable Pillar of Modern Science?”.

The FutuRSI project is developing a strategy and concrete plan for implementing a research software institution in Germany. The impulse paper published today, ‘FutuRSI: the Conception of a German Research Software Institution’ (DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.17047067), provides an overview of the current state of the German research software ecosystem.
